How to make Alphabet Flash Cards

I've been wanting to post this since before Christmas but wanted to wait until I gave them all out first and well I finally just did. I know, a little late.

The idea came from flash cards that I printed off the internet that Lilo loved and used all the time to learn the alphabet. We would go through all the letters and any of the ones that she didn't know we would put in a different pile to go over again - those were the tricky ones. It was fun to see her be able to recognize all the letters.

Since Lilo got a camera for her birthday I thought it would be fun for her to take pictures of all the items and then I could make our own flash cards. It took time to think of something for each letter and find something to photograph, but after a week or so we had all the pictures we needed. I wrote out a list of all the items for each letter and then we would find that item and Lilo or I would set it up and photograph. She only had the patience to do a few at a time and then of course would want to take other pictures instead. If you had an older child you could come up with the items together.

Then I used Photoshop to set the cards up. They fit 2 to a page. I wanted to choose a font that was easy to recognize for kids - no small "a" like this and "g". I also wanted to put both capital letters and small.

Then just print on card stock and cut out.

I made a personalized pouch for them out of felt. I realized after I made a few that the pouches were hard to get the cards in because they got caught on the felt fibres, so I lined a few of them with smooth fabric so make them easier to get in.

I love how they turned out.

Wow, those are awesome! I love the customizable aspect of this project. They seem like they would be really fun to look back on years later as well. Thanks so much for sharing this, I'll be linking.
